Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Godspeed You! Black Emperor Wiki (Song Database)
IV: Song Database#
Because of how many alternate titles are used by fans and how many versions there are of many
songs, I felt it necessary to create this comprehensive database (or rather, modify the existing one on gybecc.neocities to be more comprehensive) that will provide all versions and titles for Godspeed songs. Here's the list of all songs that GY!BE has ever played live. Most of these titles come from the band's setlists. Their corresponding titles from the albums and other early names are included after each song.
A lot of samples are often played during GY!BE sets. These can range from pre-recorded drones
and ambient loops segueing between songs to spoken word loops. Some of them are from the albums, and some are exclusively used live. These will not typically be included in the setlists unless they are especially long or played with live instruments. The untitled pieces from the 'Monumental' dance performances are also not included in this list.
1. The Dead Flag Blues - On f#a#oo - Track 1 [0:00-6:27] (Incomplete/Intro Version). AKA '”Intro”. The live version of this song is unreleased.
2. The Cowboy - On f#a#oo - Track 1 [10:10-14:27]. AKA “The Boy”. The song, on both the record and live, starts with a noisy section called “Slow Moving Trains”. For the 2002 tour, a unique outro section was added; 2025 performances included approximately 40 seconds of this outro. The 2013 version sounds significantly different from other post-hiatus performances.
3. The Dead Flag Blues (Outro) - On f#a#oo - Track 1 [14:27-16:27]. AKA “Outro”. Versions since 2001 are much slower.
4. Nothings Alright in Our Lives - On f#a#oo - Track 2 [0:00 - 01:35]. Horn/noise intro.
5. Sad Mafioso - On f#a#oo - Track 2 [01:35 - 12:19]. The original version of this track on the 1997 LP is shortened, but the final outro section is played on the subsequent CD release and all recorded live performances. Each performance starts with an improvised noise intro. Post-hiatus performances are generally much faster than pre-hiatus performances.
6. Divorce & Fever - On f#a#oo - Track 3 [0:00 - 02:44]. Strings intro.
7. Dead Metheny - On f#a#oo - Track 3 [02:44-10:51]. All performances after 2001 have a new ~7 minute outro section. The intro was slightly reworked post-hiatus.
8. Kicking Horse on Broken Hill - On f#a#oo - Track 3 [10:51-16:44]. AKA “Bolero”.
9. String Loop Manufactured During Downpour - On f#a#oo - Track 3 [16:42-21:22] AKA “Outro Drone”. This is the name of the droning loop used to conclude all post-hiatus shows and the name of the sample frequently played at the end of said drone until 2022.
10. J.L.H. Outro - On f#a#oo - Track 3 [24:54-29:02]. AKA “John Lee Hooker Outro”. Generally played as a structured jam centered on Efrim’s riff and the building drums. The riff is occasionally played during outro drones after Bruce’s departure.
11. Moya - On Slow Riot - Track 1. AKA “Gorecki”.
12. Blaise Bailey Finnegan III - On Slow Riot - Track 2. AKA “BBF3”. Some performances do not include the tape. The earliest known performance, 1997-11-12, features the full recorded interview.
13. Gathering Storm - On LYSF - Track 1 [0:00-17:25]. AKA 'Storm', 'New Thing'. The first 7 minutes of the song are also known as 'Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven'. On some earlier setlists (1999), that portion was also called 'Therry's'. April 1999 performances feature an unreleased outro that would later be replaced by “Clatters Like Worry”. Performances in 2000 are slower and sometimes feature Dave playing an improvised solo with extensive use of his fuzz wah after “Clatters”. Some performances feature a droning improvised build after the first crescendo.
14. Chart #3/Steve Reich - Incomplete version, known as 'Chart #3', on LYSF - Track 2 [04:43-07:22]. The full version of this song, known as “Steve Reich”, was never released and was the second half of the piece “Hung Over as the Queen in Maida Vale”. See the setlist of 1998-11-22 for more info. “Steve Reich” was slated to appear on a split with Shalabi Effect that was to be released in 1998 but was cancelled.
15. World Police - On LYSF - Track 2 [07:22-17:10]. AKA “World Police and Friendly Fire”, “Norsola's Thing”, and occasionally suffixed with “ACAB” in parenthesis. All versions before 2000 have a unique outro section with a reprise of the main riff. All performances from 2002 onwards have an extra crescendo. Post-hiatus versions are generally quieter and more dynamic, with Moya playing the riff until ~2012 before Thierry started playing it.
16. Monheim - On LYSF - Track 3 [01:10-13:24]. AKA “Dave's Thing”. This song was originally the first half of a piece called “Hung Over as the Queen in Maida Vale”. See the setlist of 1998-11-22 for more info. All post-hiatus performances feature the “Murray Ostril” sample from LYSF.
17. 3rd Part - On LYSF - Track 3 [13:32-23:17]. AKA “Broken Windows, Locks of Love Part III”, “New Thing (Part 3)”. The title of this song derives from it originally being written as a 3rd part to the "Storm" suite.
18. John Hughes - On LYSF - Track 4 [04:03 - 13:46]. AKA “She Dreamt She Was a Bulldozer, She Dreamt She Was Alone in an Empty Field”, “Efrim's Thing”. Performances in July 1999 feature a slide part from Dave during the intro. 1998-10-16 has a unique arrangement of John Hughes with a completely different structure than later versions.
19. 12-28-99 - On Yanqui U.X.O. - Track 1. AKA “09-15-00”. 2000 performances are played up an octave relative to later versions. An extended version was played for Jem Cohen's film Chain, but was never officially released or played live.
20. 12-28-99 (Outro) - On Yanqui U.X.O. - Track 2. AKA “09-15-00 (Cont.)”. This was sometimes, but not always, played after “12-28-99”. From 2010 to 2012, this track was always played alone, without the first part.
21. Tazer Floyd - On Yanqui U.X.O. - Track 3. AKA “Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls”. The first two performances do not include Sophie’s concluding violin line played for all other performances.
22. Motherfucker = Redeemer - On Yanqui U.X.O. - Track 4-5. AKA “Tiny Silver Hammers”. 2002 and later performances have a slower middle section than the album version. Performances from March 31, 2002 to the end of 2002 feature a new outro section. 2002-02-05, 2002-03-30, and all 2003 performances have a “drone” version of the outro with minimal or no drums.
23 Montréal Improv - A drone-based semi-improvised piece played in 2002 when Dave broke a string.
24. 2002 Noise Outro - A loose noise segment played with “JLH Outro” and encore performances of “Gathering Storm” in 2002. It is somewhat improvised but features consistent guitar parts and a similar sloppy drum beat in each performance.
25. Albanian - On Allelujah - Track 1. AKA “Mladic”. The 2003 version is a significantly different arrangement with a key change and a faster build from the intro.
26. Gamelan - On Allelujah - Track 3. AKA “We Drift Like Worried Fire”. Each performance of this song has a unique outro, often with a reprise of the main riff.
27. Hope Drone - This is the name of the live improvisation introduction to all GY!BE sets since 2010. 2010-2012 performances use either a HRSTA or “Strung Like Lights” sample instead of the normal “Dead Flag Blues” drone. 2010-2012 and 2016 performances feature casios.
28. Behemoth - Asunder, Sweet, and Other Distress played in its entirety. AKA “Big'un”. Only the second half of this song is played for Monumental dance performances. The 2012 version features significantly longer drones than later performances.
29. Bosses Hang - On Luciferian Towers - Track 2. AKA “Old New”, “Buildings”
30. Anthem for No State - On Luciferian Towers - Track 4. AKA “New New”, “Railroads”. All performances until 2016 featured an extra middle section that was dropped by 2017.
31. 2 Nouveau Tower - On Luciferian Towers - Track 3 and 1. AKA “Fam/Famine > Undoing A Luciferian Tower”. These two songs have always been played together as a long improvised suite and are extremely different from the album version with some additional sections.
32. Glacier - On G_d's Pee AT STATE's END - Track 1 (Vinyl Tracklisting). Early performances feature a different intro riff that comes in after the main theme rather than before like later performances.
33. Cliff - On G_d's Pee AT STATE's END - Track 3 (Vinyl Tracklisting) March 2022 performances segue into an outro drone based on the bells sample from the album. From November 2022 onwards, Efrim's part is significantly more dynamic.
34. Fire at Static Valley - On G_d's Pee AT STATE's END - Track 2 (Vinyl Tracklisting). The live version has an extended build.
35. Sun Is A Hole Sun Is Vapors - On 28,340 Dead - Track 1. AKA “Bagpipes”, “Dronepipes”. This track is always played following Hope Drone live. Some October 2024 performances feature different bass parts from Thierry.
36. Babys In A Thundercloud - On 28,340 Dead - Track 2. AKA “Big Country”.
37. Raindrops Cast In Lead - On 28,340 Dead - Track 3. AKA “Fast Jimmy”. Performances from 2025 onwards have the vocal sample from the album in the middle section.
38. Pale Spectator Takes Photographs - On 28,340 Dead - Tracks 4, 5, and 6. AKA “Pale 7”, “Bazouki” (For the second half). Performances from November 2024 onwards feature a ride cymbal part leading into “Grey Rubble”. Performances from June 2025 onwards start off very quietly with different parts from Thierry. The song is usually played seamlessly out of “Fire at Static Valley” or “Monheim”.
